Dental Resolutions for the New Year

It’s a new year. And millions of people are making, or following, resolutions to spark a positive change for 2020.

While the recurring themes usually include taking on a more active approach to health and fitness, such as losing weight or exercising more, what about making a dental resolution this year? After all, having good overall health is dependent upon your oral hygiene. So if you’re looking to add or modify your resolutions this year, here are some dental resolutions to consider.

  1. Master Your Brush
    Master your brush stroke, like a golf stroke. While most of us have been brushing our teeth for quite a while, we often don’t do it correctly. Using a soft-bristled toothbrush, hold it a 45 degree angle toward your gum line and gently brush in short, circular strokes for a full two minutes, twice a day. Become one with your toothbrush in 2020.
  2. Floss More
    Believe it or not, only about 30% of people truly floss their teeth daily. Flossing is an effective way to remove the debris that sticks to your teeth and creates bacteria that can lead to plaque. Brushing your teeth daily is great, but your toothbrush can’t reach certain places within your mouth, where food particles build up. And the longer your teeth are exposed to bacteria, the more susceptible they become to gum disease and cavities.  The good news? You can help keep your teeth and gums healthy by flossing every day.
  3. Smile More
    When you smile, you feel better, and so does everybody around you. Smiling has proven to improve happiness, self-confidence and longevity. And what’s a great way to enhance your smile? Preventative care is cheaper than restorative care, so schedule regular checkups and teeth cleanings every six months to ensure a clean bill of dental health.
  5. Protect & Preserve Your Teeth
    Keep your teeth healthy, they’re the only ones you have. If staying in shape is one of your New Year’s resolutions this year, consider wearing a custom fitted sports mouthguard.
